Remove overlaps in text objects?

Hi,
I'm working with the lettering tool and duplicated a word and offset the duplicate a bit in a different color.
When I go to "remove overlaps" it doesn't work to remove the overlapping stitches. I have the top layer of the text selected when I am doing this.
Is there a way to remove overlaps in lettering?
Thanks
Cheryl

With me it only did not work with the first letter i and the second letter i only the point. I did break apart twice all the words, then all the letters. The word is font "block 2" and the second i was from font "3D Foam London"
When I make the letter bigger, the overlap does work.
Thanks for looking at it. I attached the EMB.

Thanks! I'll try again when I get the chance. With that project, I ended up using a single font and forgetting about the overlap. I did try breaking apart the letters but maybe I'll try to scale it up and see what happens. It was a true type font I was working with, not one of the built-in Hatch fonts, but as an object, I'd expect that it would remove overlaps
