Open and Closed Shapes

Can anyone tell me if it is possible and if so how to convert and open curve to a closed curve (so I can fill it) please.

You cannot change an open shape to a closed shape. If you want to fill it you need to digitize it as a closed shape.

I did find a work-around. If the shapes start and end points are very close you can create an offset just a small distance away and this will be closed and can be filled. It would be a great feature if you could join points in line with many vector drawing packages.
At lead I have not missed something obvious.
